Stocks, Bonds & Mutual Funds
As a stockbroker, we can help you determine your risk tolerance, diversify your portfolio and decide how to integrate stocks, bonds, Exchange Traded Funds (ETF’s), and/or mutual funds into your retirement portfolio.
If you are looking to make stocks, bonds or mutual funds a part of your investment portfolio, remember these three words: Diversify! Diversify! Diversify!
Diversification does not ensure a profit and does not protect against losses in declining markets. It is a method used to help manage investment risk.
Your investment portfolio should include a range of stocks and bonds and other individual investments options that may be offered through a stockbroker. The more diversified your investment portfolio, the more stable and secure your nest egg will be.
Another factor to consider in building your investment portfolio is how soon you will need the money you are investing. If you are in your pre-retirement phase (30s, 40s or even 50s) and don’t plan on withdrawing money from your investments any time soon, you can afford to take some risk and weight your investment portfolio more towards riskier high-growth instruments. As you near retirement time, it may be best to invest in less risky financial instruments so that the market swings are less extreme.
Your risk tolerance or appetite for risk is another factor in determining what investments are right for you. You need to be comfortable with the risk in your investment portfolio so you can sleep at night.
You can accomplish this by purchasing individual stocks and bonds as well as purchasing mutual funds and exchange traded funds.
Mutual funds allow hundreds, and in some cases millions, of investors to pool their money together. Investors in mutual funds entrust their investment decisions to a professional money manager and their staff. Most mutual funds have clearly defined investment objectives. With over 10,000 different mutual funds now available, there is most likely a fund that will cater to just about any investment objective you might have.
The principal value and investment return of an investment will fluctuate so that your shares, when redeemed, may be worth more or less than their original cost. Mutual funds are sold by prospectus only. Consider the investment objectives, risks, charges, and expenses of the investment company carefully before investing.
Exchange Traded Funds (ETF’s) is an investment choice that resembles mutual funds but trade throughout the day, similar to individual stocks. They are comprised of stocks, bonds or other assets.
Exchange traded funds are subject to risks similar to those of stocks. Investment returns will fluctuate and are subject to market volatility, so that an investor’s shares, when redeemed or sold, may be worth more or less than their original cost. Investments in foreign investments may incur greater risks than domestic investments. An exchange traded sector fund may also be adversely affected by the performance of that specific sector or group of industries on which it is based. Although exchange traded funds are designed to provide investment results that generally correspond to the price and yield performance of their respective underlying indexes, the fund may not be able to exactly replicate the performance of the indexes because of fund expenses and other factors.
